The Metropolitan Bar - JD Wetherspoon

Restaurant | London | England | United Kingdom

Historic pub in London

The "The Metropolitan Bar - JD Wetherspoon" in London is a typical example of the popular British pub chain JD Wetherspoon and stands out for its connection to history as well as its central location in the Marylebone district. The restaurant is located in a building that was once part of the former headquarters of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first urban subway that runs under Marylebone Road. This historical significance is reflected in the name and design, making the pub a place that offers not only culinary but also cultural experiences. It is a popular meeting spot for tourists, commuters, and locals looking for a simple meal or drink in a relaxed atmosphere.

Best fish and chips in London

The interior of the Metropolitan Bar is spacious and impressive - a huge, high-ceilinged room that almost feels like a hall yet exudes the typical Wetherspoon charm. The pub combines modern elements with a touch of history: decorative ceiling crests and framed posters of the London Underground remind of the building's past, while the usual Wetherspoon formula - no music, no sports, colorful carpets, and many beer taps - creates a familiar atmosphere. Particularly striking are the "Groovy Loos," the toilets that offer an unexpected contrast with their quirky design to the otherwise simple pub. The space is designed to accommodate both large groups and individual guests, with its proximity to Baker Street Station making it ideal for a quick stop.

Wetherspoon restaurant in Marylebone

Culinary-wise, the Metropolitan Bar stays true to the classic Wetherspoon philosophy: down-to-earth British cuisine with a focus on freshness and generous portions. A highlight is the "Fish and Chips," served with a crispy batter and juicy fries, often praised as a solid, satisfying option - exactly what one would expect from a traditional pub. Equally popular is the "British Beef & Doom Ale Pie," a hearty pie with tender beef and a rich beer sauce, known for its warm presentation and full flavor. For breakfast lovers, there is the "Traditional Breakfast," a combination of sausages, bacon, eggs, and toast that kicks off the day with a hearty start. The drink selection is extensive, with a wide range of real ales and craft beers that rotate regularly, as well as freshly brewed Lavazza coffee served until noon.

British cuisine at Metropolitan Bar

The restaurant values flexibility and convenience - guests can either order at the bar or use the Wetherspoon app to order food and drinks directly to their table, which is particularly convenient when it gets busy. The service is often described as friendly and efficient, with staff working hard to ensure a smooth operation despite sometimes high guest numbers. However, there may be waiting times during peak hours, whether when ordering or delivering food, due to the popularity and central location. Nevertheless, the atmosphere remains relaxed, and the option to use free Wi-Fi makes the pub attractive to commuters or travelers.

Great spot, it's a Wetherspoons filled with knowledgeable bar staff. Manager popped over for a chat, knew his stuff. It's the reason why the cask ale is so good here. We visited during their Spring 2025 cask ale festival and the selection was outstanding.

Love this place. Good was super fast. Service was the best we received during our 2 week stay in London. We go home tomorrow and are going over to this awesome pub for our last meal here.

Massive bar, very busy considering the size of the place. The food was good, portions were very decent, prices good. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Ordered 4 large breakfasts and paid via the app. Food arrived with no fried eggs, they advertise 2 fried eggs with the breakfast. Instead of eggs there were an extra 3 hash browns. The staff did not mention anything nor offer any apology. When I asked where the eggs were, they said they had had no eggs for 2 days. If I had been told when ordering, I would have gone elsewhere. Appalling customer service that I can't be told that what I ordered is not available and am expected to accept something completely different as a substitute.

A great Spoons. Visiting the inside is reason enough but the standard Spoons drinks and food inside as well. Zone 1 prices.

Busy 'Spoons pub Visited on a Monday evening about 6pm and pleasantly surprised at how busy it was and the prices. We know 'Spoons are cheap but thought London prices may be in operation, but no. Pints of food beer from £2.80ish We had just paid £6+for a pint across the road in a place with far less atmosphere Would definitely go again

Went in for breakfast, the young lady who took my order was excellent. Gave my table number and waited, after a short while a male member of staff wandered by muttering my table number without looking at the actual number on the table. Before I could say anything he disappeared. After waiting 15 minutes I asked the lady who served me, how long would my breakfast be. Oh she said, off to the kitchen she went and appeared shortly after with an apology and my luke warm breakfast which wasn't the best. As I was eating the same chap wandered past with two large breakfasts, looking around he found a table next to me which was and had never been occupied whilst I was there. He looked up and down then placed the plates on the vacant table. Five minutes later he came back and took the plates presumably to the people whose order it was. Ok the place is huge with many tables but surely they could be more organised when delivering the food. Just to add this was early and the place wasn't that busy so no excuses.

Always clean and always good service. Got there just after midday and it was briskly busy but had no trouble finding a seat. Ordered first drink at the bar - which had a fuller selection than on the menu - then ordered food and drinks via the app. Great idea that app! Food and drink came quick and was very good. One of the best Wetherspoons.
